TV commemorates 9/11 two decades later
IT’S BEEN 20 years since the tragedy of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and onboard United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed in Shanksburg, Pa.
Here are some specials commemorating that awful day in our country’s history.
“No Responders Left Behind”
(Discovery+) The documentary features Jon Stewart and 9/11 activist John Feal and his FealGoodFoundation as they fight to get health benefits and compensation for first responders suffering from illnesses contracted from toxins at Ground Zero. Filmed over the course of five years.
“NYC Epicenters: 9/11 2021½”
(HBO Max) Spike Lee’s four-part documentary series includes over 200 interviews and eyewitness accounts from New York residents from all walks of life — from journalists, politicians, and first responders to Lee’s friends and family.
“Memory Box: Echoes of 9/11”
(Peacock) Tells the story of the tragic day via eyewitness testimonies. In the months following 9/11, over 500 people gave their accounts of what they experienced and observed via a small video booth. Twenty years later, the same people return and reflect.
“Turning Point: 9/11 and The War on Terror” (Netflix)
Now streaming, this fiveAmerican part docuseries focuses on a more policy-minded view of recent history, examining the failure in intelligence that led to the tragedy and the subsequent war on terror. It features interviews with everyone from CIA and US military veterans to American eyewitnesses to Afghan warlords.
“The Outsider” (AppleTV+ and Prime Video)
A new film that film examines how 9/11 is being written into history in realtime and takes a behindthe-scenes look at the creation of the 9/11 museum.
“9/11: Four Flights” (History Channel)
Premiering Sept. 11 at 8 p.m. as part of the History Channel’s seven hours of related programming, this two-hour documentary tells the story of people who were onboard flights American 11, United 175, 77, and United 93, covering the bravery of the passengers and crew through the eyes of their families and friends.
“CNN Films Presents: 911”
A minute-by-minute account of the attacks on the World Trade Center from the perspective of first responders. It also covers where many of the first responders are today, and features the loved ones of fallen firefighters. Airs Saturday at 9 p.m.
“Verdi’s Requiem: The Met Remembers” (PBS)
“Great Performances” and The Metropolitan Opera present a special live performance of Verdi’s “Requiem” commemorating the 20th anniversary of the attacks. Conducted by Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Airs Saturday at 8 p.m.
“Twenty Years Later: Remembering September 11”
(NY1) Hosted by Pat Kiernan from the Plaza of the 9/11 Memorial, the one-hour special will highlight the revitalization of Lower Manhattan and reveal the health challenges survivors continue to face.
“9/11: Inside the President’s War Room”
(Apple TV+)
This new special, narrated by actor Jeff Daniels, tells the story of 9/11 through the eyes of the Presidency and recounts the 12 hours after the strike. Features never-beforeheard testimony from President George W. Bush and
others and includes nearly 200 previously unpublished photos.
