No. 8 Irish fight off upset-minded Toledo
Jack Coan hit Michael Mayer for an 18-yard touchdown pass with 1:09 remaining for the third lead change in a wild fourth quarter and No. 8 Notre Dame held off determined Toledo, 32-29, on Saturday in South Bend, Ind.
The victory preserved a 25game home winning streak for Notre Dame (2-0) and came after Toledo (1-1, 0-1 MAC) had taken a 29-24 lead on freshman quarterback Dequan Finn’s 26yard bootleg TD run with 1:35 remaining. Finn split playing time with sophomore Carter Bradley, who threw for 213 yards.
Coan, who threw for 366 yards and four touchdowns in Notre Dame’s season-opening 41-38 overtime victory at Florida State last Sunday, shared playing time with true freshman Tyler Buchner.
But he directed the threeplay, 75-yard scoring drive, which took just 26 seconds with the aid of two Toledo penalties.
Texas A&M 10, Colorado 7
In Denver, sophomore backup quarterback Zach Calzada threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Spiller with 2:41 remaining and the No. 5 Aggies (2-0) edged the Buffs (1-1).
Spiller’s TD gave A&M its first lead in a game in which it lost freshman QB Haynes King to a lower right leg injury and eight of their first nine drives were three-and-outs.
Iowa 27, Iowa State 17
In Ames, Iowa, Jack Campbell returned a fumble 6 yards for a touchdown and No. 10 Iowa ran its winning streak against No. 9
Iowa State to six games with a victory that ruined the most-anticipated home game in Cyclones history. In the first Cy-Hawk Trophy game matching ranked teams in 65 total meetings, the Hawkeyes (2-0) were not about to play the foil for Iowa State’s feel-good story.
Arkansas 40, Texas 21
In Fayetteville, Ark., the Razorbacks (2-0) piled up 333 rushing yards and got touchdowns from four different players on the ground while its defense stuffed the No. 15 Longhorns in dominant fashion.
Miami 25, Appalachian State 23
In Miami Gardens, Fla., D’Eriq King threw for 200 yards and rushed for 67 more, freshman
Andy Borregales kicked a goahead 43-yard field goal with 2:04 remaining and the No. 22 Hurricanes (1-1) rallied from a halftime deficit against the Mountaineers (1-1), who led 23-22 with 5:48 left.
Rutgers 17, Syracuse 7
In Syracuse, the Scarlet Knights (2-0) took advantage of two Orange (1-1) second-half miscues.
A fumble by Syracuse quarterback Tommy DeVito was recovered on the Orange 10, and a 27yard field goal by Rutgers’ Valentino Ambrosio made it 17-7 with 8:23 remaining in the game.
Army 38, Western Kentucky 35
In West Point, Christian Anderson rushed for a career-high 119 yards and passed for a touchdown, and the Black Knights survived a WKU rally.
