MLB: Sawx stay up in WC hunt

-

Kiké Hernández’s game-tying RBI single caromed off the second-base bag and into shallow center field, sparking a three-run, seventh-inning rally that carried the AL wild-card leading Red Sox to an 8-6 victory over the Orioles at Fenway Park on Sunday and a sweep of their three-game series.

It was the fifth straight win for Boston, which leads Toronto by one game and the Yankees by 2 ½ in the playoff chase.

In Toronto, José Berríos pitched into the seventh inning to beat his former team, Bo Bichette homered in a five-run first

inning and the Blue Jays topped the Twins, 5-3, improving to 15-3 in September.

In Kansas City, Mo., rookie and former Mets prospect Jarred Kelenic homered, doubled twice and wrapped up his impressive series, leading the Mariners over the Royals, 7-1. Kelenic went 5 for 9 with three home runs, two doubles, three walks and seven RBIs in the three-game series.

Shohei Ohtani struck out 10 but went winless in consecutive starts on the mound for the first time since June, and the A’s rebounded from a bullpen meltdown to beat the Angels, 3-2, in 10 innings for their fifth straight victory.

In St. Louis, Padres center fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. dropped Nolan Arenado’s bases-loaded pop-up and heaved the ball home — choosing not to make an easy throw to second or third for a force out — leading to a five-run first inning, and the Cardinals beat San Diego, 8-7, for an eight-game winning streak.

In Cincinnati, Clayton Kershaw pitched five sharp innings for his first win since June 27, Gavin Lux and Corey Seager each hit two-run homers and the streaking Dodgers won, 8-5, sending the sliding Reds to their eighth straight series defeat.
