MLB: Red Sox tie AL wild-card lead

Christian Vazquez tripled home the tiebreakin­g run in the ninth inning, and the Red Sox moved to the brink of a postseason berth with a 5-3 win over the Nationals on Saturday in Washington.

Boston is tied with the Yankees for the top AL wild card spot entering the final day of the regular season.

In Toronto, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit his 47th home run, and the Blue Jays pressed their AL wild-card chase to the final day of the regular season by thumping the Orioles, 10-1. The Blue Jays remain a game behind the Red Sox and the Yankees.

In Seattle, Mitch Haniger drove in five runs and his two-out, two-run single in the eighth inning helped the Mariners win 6-4 over the Angels to remain alive for an AL wild-card berth.

In Los Angeles, Julio Urias pitching one-run ball into the seventh inning to win his 20th game of the season as the Dodgers beat the Brewers 8-3. The Dodgers reduced the first-place Giants lead in the NL West to one game going into the final day of the season Sunday.

In San Francisco, the Giants missed a chance to clinch the NL West on their own field, falling to the Padres 3-2 when Jake Cronenwort­h hit an RBI double in the 10th inning.

SOCCER: Red Bulls earn road win

Andrew Gutman scored in the 73rd minute against his former team, Carlos Coronel posted his ninth shutout of the season and the Red Bulls defeated host FC Cincinnati, 1-0. New York is unbeaten, with three wins in its last five games to climb into the MLS Eastern Conference playoff race.

NFL: Gronk out with rib injury

Buccaneers TE Rob Gronkowski will miss his return trip to New England because of hairline fractures in his ribs.

Gronkowski was downgraded to out by the team Saturday and did not travel with the Super Bowl champions for Sunday night’s anticipate­d matchup with the Patriots. OLB Jason Pierre-Paul (shoulder) also will miss the game for Tampa Bay.

The Bears said rookie quarterbac­k Justin Fields will start against the Lions on Sunday. The team announced Fields will make his second straight start while listing Andy Dalton as doubtful.

The Ravens activated RB Le’Veon Bell from the practice squad and put DE Derek Wolfe on injured reserve. The Ravens play at Denver on Sunday.
