Young Jets lineman agrees to extension

If the Jets wanted to set a precedent that they will reward young players who perform, then that is what they have done with John Franklin-Myers.

The 25-year-old defensive end, who broke out last season and has continued to impress in the early going of this campaign, has agreed to a contract extension with the Jets, a source confirmed to The Post’s Brian Costello. The deal is reportedly for four years, $55 million with $30 million in total guarantees. Franklin-Myers was in the last year of his rookie contract.

Franklin-Myers was a fourth-round pick of the Rams in 2018 who had his moments in his rookie season — including a strip-sack of Tom Brady in the Super Bowl — but was waived amid a roster crunch late in the 2019 preseason.

Joe Douglas, then the new Jets general manager, swooped in for a major find who would take some time, as Franklin-Myers spent the season on injured reserve. He returned last year and developed into a starter, finishing with three sacks and 13 hits of the quarterback in 15 games.

This year he has taken the next step and tallied three sacks in four games, becoming a foundational piece of the defensive line that needed players to emerge after Carl Lawson was lost for the year with a ruptured Achilles tendon. The defensive line has been a surprising strength in large part because of Franklin-Myers, who only trails Quinnen Williams (3.5) for the team lead in sacks and also has one of the two forced fumbles on the team.

The Jets do not want the 25-year-old to go anywhere, and tying him up sends the message that good work will be rewarded around a team that wants more Franklin-Myers.
