Flacco brought back for vet presence

- By BRIAN COSTELLO

A day after losing Zach Wilson to a knee injury, the Jets made a move to acquire a veteran quarterback.

The Jets acquired Joe Flacco from the Eagles on Monday in exchange for a conditional sixth-round pick that can become a fifthrounder based on playing time, according to a source.

The Jets will be without Wilson, who suffered a right PCL sprain in Sunday’s 54-13 loss to the Patriots, for two to four weeks. The expectation is Mike White will be the starter this week against the Bengals and the Jets will get Flacco up to speed to back him up.

Flacco spent last season as Sam Darnold’s backup with the Jets and played in five games, starting four. The 36year-old threw six touchdowns and three interceptions for 864 yards. The Jets lost all of his starts.

Flacco departed as a free agent in the offseason and signed with the Eagles. The Jets had interest in bringing Flacco back in the offseason, but they felt he wanted to go

to a team where he thought he had a chance to start. The Jets were locked in on drafting Wilson with the No. 2 overall pick and Flacco knew he would have no chance of starting with them. The Eagles have started Jalen Hurts all season but also have Gardner Minshew, who now will be the backup.

The Jets have Josh Johnson on their practice squad, but clearly don’t trust him enough to make him White’s backup. Jets general manager Joe Douglas was an area scout for the Ravens and championed Flacco when Baltimore drafted him in 2008.

The Jets are banged up at linebacker. Rookie Jamien Sherwood suffered a torn Achilles tendon on Sunday and is out for the season. Quincy Williams is in the concussion protocol. Blake Cashman injured his groin. Saleh said they are hopeful to get C.J. Mosley (hamstring) back this week but have to see what Mosley can do in practice. Jarrad Davis is also expected to come off IR and return to practice, but he may not be ready to play Sunday. Saleh said the Jets will work out several free-agent linebackers on Tuesday.
