Parade ‘slayer’: I’m being ‘demonized’

- Jesse O’Neill

The man accused of killing six people and injuring dozens more with his SUV during a rampage at a Wisconsin Christmas parade said he feels “dehumanized” and “demonized” behind bars.

“I just feel like I’m being monster — demonized,” and “dehumanized,” Darrell Brooks said in his first interview since last Sunday’s ghastly attack with Fox News Digital Wednesday inside the Waukesha County Jail.

The accused killer — a career criminal and registered child sex offender — calmly answered questions during the video chat but offered no insight as to why he allegedly mowed down the crowd, according to Fox News.

Brooks, 39, allegedly ran over the mother of his child at a gas station with his red Ford Escape earlier in the month, but was released on “inappropriately low” bail, prosecutors said.

He had not received any other visitors since the attack, including his mother — who released a statement Wednesday, accusing Wisconsin’s criminal justice system of failing him. “Instead of offering help and resources to combat the problem [mental illness] a jail cell was given. Over and over again,” Dawn Woods reportedly wrote.

“When mental illness is not properly treated the person becomes sicker and sicker. It doesn’t go away once a person becomes an adult.”

The inmate reportedly put down his phone and rose from his chair when informed of his mom’s statement by the correspondents.

Jackson Sparks, 8; Tamara Durand, 52; Jane Kulich, 52; LeAnna Owen, 71; Virginia Sorenson, 79; and Wilhelm Hospel, 81, were all killed in the Nov. 21 attack. Another 62 people were injured.

Brooks faces six charges of firstdegree intentional homicide, each punishable by a maximum sentence of life behind bars without parole.
