Season over for WR Davis

- By BRIAN COSTELLO

Another one of the Jets’ highpriced offseason signings is done for the year.

Wide receiver Corey Davis will undergo season-ending, core-muscle surgery Tuesday. Davis signed a three-year, $37.5 million contract with the Jets in March. He has battled hip and groin injuries this season. He returned to the lineup for Sunday’s loss to the Eagles after missing last week’s game against the Texans due to the groin injury. Davis had two catches for 15 yards against the Eagles, but looked like the groin was bothering him.

In the fourth quarter, after stretching to attempt to catch a pass, Davis remained on the ground on the sideline for a bit and then got up limping. He did not return to the game.

“I feel awful for Corey,” coach Robert Saleh said. “He’s one of the true pros in this league. He goes about his business the right way. He shows up every day to work. He does everything. For his season to be cut short, I know he’s hurting. At the same time, we’ll get him back next year and he’ll be better than ever.”

Davis finished his first season with the Jets with 34 catches for 492 yards and four touchdowns in nine games.

The Jets signed Davis, who spent his first four seasons with the Titans, to bolster their offense. The Jets have had bad injury luck with their big signings. Defensive end Carl Lawson, who signed a three-year, $45 million deal with the Jets, has missed the entire season after tearing an Achilles tendon in August.

➤ The Jets have a new kicker … again. They signed veteran Eddy Pineiro on Monday and cut Alex Kessman, who missed two extra points on Sunday. Pineiro will be the Jets’ ninth kicker since 2017.

➤ CB Michael Carter II is in the concussion protocol, but Saleh said there is optimism he can play Sunday. RG Laurent Duvernay-Tardif (ankle) is day-to-day. … LB Blake Cashman was transferred from injured reserve to the reserve/ COVID-19 list on Monday.
