COVID shuts down ‘City’

-

AUDIENCE members were in their seats with pink martinis in hand at Candace Bushnell’s show “Is There Still Sex in the City?” at the Daryl Roth Theatre on Tuesday when the performance was canceled at the last minute.

A rep told us the star — and author of “Sex in the City,” a collection of columns that the HBO show is based on — tested positive for COVID-19 just before the curtain went up.

We are told Bushnell is feeling good and has only mild symptoms.

The show is being shut down permanently at the downtown theater, but the rep told us “there are plans to bring it back to New York . . . as well as take it across America and to Europe, Asia and Australia.”

Producer Marc Johnston said in a statement, “We look forward to bringing the production back to New York at a safer time, as well as sending Candace around the world to tell the true story of the OG Carrie Bradshaw when it is safe to do so.”

The show officially opened on Dec. 7. Page Six previously reported that Bushnell was surprised onstage with a cake to belatedly celebrate her 63rd birthday.

Her show is just the latest theater casualty of COVID’s Omicron variant.

Broadway’s “Jagged Little Pill” decided to permanently shutter after cast and crew members tested positive. The last performance was Friday. On Monday, producers said in a statement: “In light of the extreme uncertainty ahead of us this winter, and forced to choose between continuing performances and protecting our company, we’ve made the difficult decision to close our doors.”

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Hamilton” is closed through Christmas, while his “Freestyle Love Supreme” canceled a show last week but has since resumed. “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” “Ain’t Too Proud,” “Mrs. Doubtfire” and “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical” are other Broadway shows that had to briefly close due to COVID cases.
