HERE’S BABY NO. 1

First Apple dumpling of 2022

A pair of Brooklyn parents got a nearly 8-pound New Year’s gift — the first baby born in New York City in 2022.

She is Leyla Gessel Tzunun Garcia, who was born at midnight sharp at Coney Island Hospital.

Leyla weighs 7 pounds, 6.3 ounces and measures 19.5 inches, according to New York City Health + Hospitals.

She is the pride and joy of Irma Garcia, 29, and German Tzunun of Gravesend, Brooklyn (together, right).

“I can’t really explain how I felt, but when I gave birth to her, I was really happy, and it’s the best gift for the new year,” Garcia said in Spanish.

The mother said she hopes her daughter will have “good health” and a “good life.”

Garcia, having completed her 40 weeks, went in for a routine appointment, not having any idea she’d be staying in the hospital. But after a sonogram, doctors suggested a cesarean section.

Hizzoner’s warm welcome

Tzunun was not available for an interview, and officials declined to share his profession, the couple’s nationality, or whether they are married or plan to be.

Leyla’s due date had been Dec. 30. She’s the couple’s first child.

And despite the still-raging pandemic, mom said the hospital “feels safe.”

Mayor Adams hailed the new New Yorker.

“Welcome to the world, Leyla! We’re so glad you’re here. When we talked about fighting for a brighter future, we’re talking about our newest and littlest New Yorkers like you. Happy birthday!” he tweeted.

Leyla continues a proud streak for Coney Island Hospital: She’s the facility’s third consecutive first city baby of a new year.

Jaxel Rodriguez had that honor in 2021.

The year before that, in 2020, two newborns shared the distinction of arriving at that same exact moment: Aidan Zobnin, at Coney Island, and Anthony Saraceno, at Staten Island’s Richmond University Medical Center.
