Icy roads wreak havoc on practice for Big Blue

- By PAUL SCHWARTZ

A difficult season nearing an end included some more aggravation Wednesday for the Giants, as icy road conditions and numerous car accidents caused massive delays that left several players and at least one coach sitting in traffic when they were supposed to be at the team facility.

“Man, I was on Route 3 for four hours this morning,’’ safety Julian Love said.

Late arrivals are almost always met with fines, but no fines were levied this time. Head coach Joe Judge said all the latecomers phoned in early in the morning to alert the coaching staff that they were not going to make it on time. Most of the traffic issues were experienced by players driving in from Manhattan, Hoboken and Weehawken.

➤ Jake Fromm will get another shot at starting at quarterback, Sunday against Washington, because Mike Glennon is out with an injured left wrist. Fromm got his first NFL start two weeks ago in Philadelphia, but was so ineffective he was benched in the second half for Glennon.

“For me, any opportunity to play in the NFL is a great opportunity,” Fromm said.

➤ Nothing worked out for OL Isaiah Wilson and the Giants. The former Titans firstround draft pick was signed to the practice squad Sept. 30, but struggled to get in shape and live up to the team standards. He was active for one game but did not play. Offensive line coach Rob Sale, asked last week what Wilson needed to do to get on the field, said, “be dependable.’’

Tuesday, the Giants cut Wilson from the practice squad.

“We make roster moves all the time,’’ Judge said. “I don’t go into every specific individual move. I appreciate what Isaiah did for us, wish him the best of luck. I think he has an opportunity to be a professional football player and I wish him the best wherever he goes.’’

➤ WR Kadarius Toney (shoulder) practiced on a limited basis. … Four players were activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list: DL Dexter Lawrence ,OT Korey Cunningham, DL Danny Shelton and WR Darius Slayton. … Rookie LB Elerson Smith (neck) was placed on injured reserve, ending his season.

➤ Defensive lineman Leonard Williams is this year’s winner of the George Young-Ernie Accorsi Good Guy Award, given annually to a player for his consistent and outstanding cooperation with the writers who cover the team on a daily basis.
