Megill placed on IL with right biceps injury

- By MIKE PUMA

The Mets suddenly have a vacancy to fill in their rotation.

Four days after his worst career start, the team placed Tylor Megill on the injured list with right biceps inflammation Sunday. The right-hander underwent subsequent imaging that revealed tendinitis. He is shut down from throwing for the next few days and then will be reevaluated.

Megill lasted only 1 ¹/3 innings and allowed eight earned runs in his start against the Nationals on Wednesday.

“It just crept up,” Megill said after the Mets’ 8-7 loss to the Mariners at Citi Field. “I woke up the next morning after my start in Washington with a little discomfort and technically I could throw through it, but obviously we don’t want it to linger or get worse so we are just taking it a day at a time right now.”

Overall he is 4-2 with a 4.41 ERA in seven starts as Jacob deGrom’s replacement in the rotation. DeGrom has been on the IL since the season started, after he was diagnosed with a stress reaction in his right scapula.

Megill’s 15-day IL stint — backdated to May 12 — was the Mets’ second hit in recent days: James McCann will undergo surgery for a hamate bone fracture in his left wrist and is expected to miss six weeks.

Colin Holderman was selected from Triple-A Syracuse to fill Megill’s roster spot. The Mets moved Trevor May to the 60-day injured list to place Holderman on the 40-man roster.

David Peterson could be an option in the longer term to replace Megill in the rotation. But the left-hander just pitched Friday for Syracuse. The Mets will need a starter in Megill’s place for Monday night against the Cardinals, and manager Buck Showalter indicated he’s leaning toward Trevor Williams for that spot.

Williams’ last appearance came behind Megill on Wednesday in Washington. In that outing the right-hander threw 3 2/3 shutout innings.

“[Guys] are just going to go out and keep doing their thing,” McGill said. “It sucks for me being on the sideline and obviously not pitch … seeing [teammates] pitch well gives you energy, you want to get back out there and do the same as them.”
