MLB: Wheeler’s 8 Ks leads Phillies Zack Wheeler struck out eight over six sharp innings, Bryson Stott hit a two-run homer, and the Phillies won their ninth straight game, matching their longest streak in 11 years, with a 4-0 victory Saturday over the Diamondbacks in Philadelphia.
In San Francisco, Clayton Kershaw returned from the injured list and gave up a go-ahead home run to Thairo Estrada in a two-run second inning as the Giants beat the Dodgers, 3-2. Los Angeles outhit the Giants 13-5 but stranded 14 runners.
In Minneapolis, Luis Arraez, who leads the majors in batting average, hit his first career grand slam and the Twins spoiled Shane
Baz’s season debut, beating the Rays, 6-5. In Atlanta, Dansby Swanson blooped a three-run single, Ozzie Albies added a grand slam in an eight-run seventh inning and the Braves beat the Pirates, 10-4, for their 10th consecutive win.
In Chicago, loud chants of “Fire Tony!” broke out at Guaranteed Rate Field as manager Tony La Russa and the White Sox blew a five-run lead and lost to the Rangers, 11-9 in 10 innings.
In Houston, Jon Berti drove in two runs to help the Marlins extend their winning streak to five games with a 5-1 victory over the Astros.
NCAA: Texas A&M to World Series
Texas A&M swept its NCAA super regional and advanced to the College World Series in baseball, while Tennessee, Virginia
Tech and Texas won to even their best-of-three series. Mississippi and Arkansas won their super regional openers to move within a win of making the CWS.
In super regional openers late Saturday, Auburn played at Oregon State and Connecticut at Stanford.
No. 5 national seed Texas A&M beat Louisville, 4-3, for a second straight onerun win and returns to the CWS for the first time since 2017.
Kentucky’s Abby Steiner set a collegiate record in the 200 meters at the NCAA track and field championships in Eugene, Ore. Her time of 21.80 seconds bested LSU sophomore Favour Ofili’s record of 21.96 set earlier this year.
ETC.: Charlotte blanks Red Bulls Ben Bender scored a deflected goal from outside the box in the fourth minute of first-half stoppage time to spark Charlotte FC to a 2-0 victory over the Red Bulls in Charlotte, N.C. The Red Bulls (6-4-5) were outshot 11-3 and Charlotte had a 5-1 edge in shots on goal.
In Toronto, Tony Finau birdied the final hole for an 8-under 62 and a share of the RBC Canadian Open lead with defending champion Rory McIlroy. McIlroy had a 65 to match Finau at 11-under 199 at St. George’s Golf and Country Club.
In Galloway Township, N.J., Frida Kinhult birdied the par-5 18th for a 4-under 67 and the second-round lead in the ShopRite LPGA Classic. Lauren Coughlin was a stroke back after a bogey-free 65.
