MLB: Mikolas loses no-no in 9th

Miles Mikolas was one strike from a nohitter when he gave up a double to Cal Mitchell — driven over the head of Harrison Bader in center — with two outs in the ninth inning, as the Cardinals routed the Pirates 9-1 Tuesday night in St. Louis to cap a doublehead­er sweep.

● In Washington, Michael Harris II and Travis d’Arnaud each had three hits and homered for the second straight game, and the Braves won their 13th straight, connecting five times in a 10-4 victory the Nationals.

● In Boston, Rafael Devers hit a threerun homer, Nick Pivetta pitched eight strong innings and the Red Sox beat the slumping Athletics 6-1.

● In Toronto, Ryan Mountcastl­e hit a two-run home run, Austin Hays had a solo shot and the Orioles beat the Blue Jays 6-5.

● Tigers pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez has been placed on the restricted list because of a marital issue, according to sources, and there’s no date yet for his return. — Jon Heyman

● Blue Jays left-hander Hyun Jin Ryu will miss the rest of the season because of ligament damage in his pitching elbow that will require surgery.

● Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg has been placed on the 15-day injured list with a stress reaction of the ribs.

NFL: Bills owner hospitaliz­ed

Bills and Sabres co-owner Kim Pegula is in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Boca Raton, Fla., receiving medical care for what her family described as “some unexpected health issues.” The statement didn’t specify the type of medical issues and asked to respect the family’s need for privacy.

● Former Giants wide receiver Golden Tate signed to play for the Port Angeles Lefties of the West Coast League, a summer league for college players. Tate, who played baseball for two years at Notre Dame, hasn’t played in the NFL since 2020.

NHL: Vegas hires ex-Bruin Cassidy

Bruce Cassidy wasn’t out of a job for long. Less than a week after he was fired by the Bruins, Cassidy has been hired as head coach of the Golden Knights. Cassidy replaced Peter DeBoer, fired after Vegas missed the playoffs for the first time in its five-year history.

● The Rangers announced Jessica Campbell will be on their coaching staff for developmen­t camp. She was the first woman on a coaching staff of a national team as a Germany assistant for the 2022 World Championsh­ip.

ETC.: U.S. draws at El Salvador

Jordan Morris scored in the first minute of second-half stoppage time, offsetting Alexander Larin’s 35th-minute goal past poorly positioned Ethan Horvath and giving the United States a 1-1 draw at El Salvador in a soggy CONCACAF Nations Cup match.

● In Al Rayyan, Qatar, Costa Rica completed the 32-nation World Cup lineup as Joel Campbell scored a third-minute goal for a 1-0 victory over New Zealand.

● Hawks guard Bogdan Bogdanovic is recovering from surgery on his right patellar tendon after knee inflammati­on this past season.

● Russian and Belarusian players will be allowed to compete at the U.S. Open this year but only as neutrals, the USTA announced.

● The Connecticu­t athletic department self-reported 15 minor NCAA violations in 2021, including a women’s basketball player accepting cash from fans.
