NHL: Matthews wins Hart Trophy

Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews was named the winner of the Hart Memorial Trophy as the league’s most valuable player voted by the Profession­al Hockey Writers’ Associatio­n in a ceremony held in Tampa, Fla. Matthews, who scored 60 goals, also earned the Ted Lindsay Award that is the given to the most outstandin­g player as voted by his fellow players.

Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar won the Norris Trophy as the league’s best defenseman by a narrow margin of 25 voting points over Nashville’s Roman Josi.

Moritz Seider of the Red Wings won the Calder Trophy that honors the league’s top rookie. Seider led all rookie defensemen with 50 points.

Rangers general manager Chris Drury was named a finalist for the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year award along with the Lightning’s Julien BriseBois and the Avalanche’s Joe Sakic. The winner will be revealed at the 2022 NHL Draft on July 7-8 in Montreal.

The Oilers have given coach Jay Woodcroft a three-year contract extension for taking over the team in February and leading it to the Western Conference Final.

The Stars announced that they have hired Peter DeBoer as their new coach, a month after the former Devils and Sharks head coach was fired by Golden Knights.

MLB: Giants upend Braves

Mike Yastrzemsk­i broke out of a slump with a go-ahead two-run double in the sixth inning, Joc Pederson and Austin Wynns homered and the Giants beat the Braves 12-10 in Atlanta.

In Minneapoli­s, Andrés Giménez had an RBI single in the 11th inning and the Guardians beat Minnesota 6-5 to move percentage points ahead of the Twins atop the AL Central Division.

In Cincinnati, Tony Gonsolin became the first pitcher in the majors to win nine games, Freddie Freeman drove in five runs and the Dodgers beat the Reds 8-2.

NFL: Commanders’ Snyder accused A woman accused Washington Commanders owner Dan Snyder of sexually harassing and assaulting her on a team plane in 2009, and the woman was later paid $1.6 million by the team to settle her claims, according to a document obtained by the Washington Post.

The Post reported that it had obtained a letter by an attorney working for the team that detailed the woman’s allegation­s while arguing that her claims were not credible.

TENNIS: Williams wins return match Serena Williams returned for her first competitiv­e tennis match in nearly a year by partnering with Ons Jabeur to a 2-6, 6-3, 13-11 victory over Sara Sorribes Tormo and Marie Bouzkova in the match tiebreaker in the third set in the first round of the Eastbourne women’s doubles in England.

NCAA: Texas A&M gets CWS win Nathan Dettmer pitched three-hit ball over seven shutout innings, and Texas A&M beat Notre Dame 5-1 in a College World Series eliminatio­n game in Omaha, Neb.

Will McEntire limited Auburn to three hits and a run in seven innings, Peyton Stovall became the first player in 13 years with five hits in a CWS game and Arkansas eliminated the Tigers with an 11-1 victory
