Gummies join ‘high’ society

-

FORGET passed canapes — the hottest hors d’oeuvres at many Upper East Side society parties these days are pot gummies and other psychedelic edibles.

At one recent bash at a $50 million-plus property, we hear that a septuagenarian uptown doyen was seen openly offering gummies to guests in an artisanal objet d’art. Accepting the “high”-end party favors were older rock royalty and blue-chip fashionistas, among younger guests.

One top international socialite told us hosts handing out gummies is de rigueur at some UES bashes. “And mushroom chocolates are huge,” she added. (That’s magic mushrooms.)

“It’s been going on for two summers in the Hamptons,” said another uptown host. “In the old days it used to be cocaine, but you can’t really offer that anymore in polite society. Now you can be at a respectable party with normal professional people, not like a rave, and people ask if you have a gummy. It’s a harmless party favor and considered more socially acceptable for the Upper East Side and Hamptons crowd. It’s not just 20-somethings: The 50-something crowd is doing this.” Our source knowledgeably told us, “They are called edibles.”

Added another: “I have seen guests doling them out to willing takers, and have heard of a few of the older social set enjoying them.”

Out in Hollywood, smoking weed at parties has been hip for years. But the Eastern upper crust is just catching up.

Beyond parties, where a source said they’ve seen bowls of edibles, another insider told us the old-money set has been using “toad venom for therapeutic purposes. They go on trips to do this with an assistant . . . like a shaman. They’re doing it legally. It’s done medically. You need resources for all of that.”

Then again, one issue is that the offered gummies don’t come with a suggested dosage. At least one guest, who wanted to impress but tripped too hard, had to hightail it out of a bash before possibly being carried out.
