Jets add OL help as Fant put on IR

The hits keep coming for the Jets, and they are likely to continue because of an ever-thinning offensive line.

George Fant was placed on injured reserve, the team announced Tuesday. He becomes the Jets’ third offensive tackle to land on IR this season.

Fant has been dealing with a knee injury and played just over half the snaps in the 27-12 loss to the Bengals on Sunday, in which quarterback Joe Flacco was sacked four times, fumbled twice and was hit nine times in all.

Already, the Jets (1-2) have been without former first-round pick Mekhi Becton, who was lost for the season after suffering a kneecap fracture during training camp. Free-agent signing Duane Brown is also on IR after a Week 1 shoulder injury against the Ravens.

Brown is eligible to return in Week 5 against the Dolphins and can begin practicing next week, while Fant will be eligible to come back in Week 8 against the Patriots.

To help fill the void, the Jets signed offensive tackle Cedric Ogbuehi from the Texans’ practice squad to their active roster on Tuesday. They also signed journeyman tackle Mike Remmers to the practice squad on Monday. It is expected Remmers, a 10-year vet, will be added to the active roster when he is “up to speed,” according to his agent, Brett Tessler.

Ogbuehi, whom the Bengals drafted 21st overall out of Texas A&M in 2015, spent four years in Cincinnati before stints with the Jaguars, Seahawks, Ravens, Titans and eventually the Texans, who signed the 30-year-old in March before releasing him in August and then signing him to their practice squad.

Remmers, 33, most recently was on the Chiefs roster last year. He also played for the Giants in 2019, starting 14 games at right tackle. Other stops in his career included the Vikings, Panthers and Chargers.

The Jets’ offensive line, considered at one time to be a possible strength, has been disastrous through the first three games, with Flacco getting sacked nine times and fumbling four times.
