CAREER COACH

- GO TO GREG

My employer is introducing a sabbatical program in 2023. Depending on your hire date, they are granting four to six weeks off with pay for emotional wellness when employees reach a milestone of 15, 25 and so on. The problem is if you already just passed one of those milestones, you have to wait five years until the next one, but if you have 19 years of service, you can get the time off next year. That doesn’t seem fair. Does an employee who has already passed the milestone have any recourse in this matter?

Yes, to use the paid time off that they have accrued under the company’s regular PTO policy to take a wellness break until they become eligible. It is a generous program and demonstrates that your employer cares about culture and wellness and all employees should be grateful for that. No matter where the company draws the line on when the benefit is earned, some employees will be on the wrong side of the line, so there’s no way to please everyone — unless of course, everyone recognizes and appreciates that they are all better off than they were before the policy was implemented, even if some people have to wait longer than others.

My interview was scheduled for 45 minutes and ended after 20. Good sign or bad sign? I have followed up but haven’t heard back from the company, and it has been two days since the interview.

What you describe sounds very, very bad my friend. Interview length doesn’t necessarily portend good or bad outcome — that depends on where you are in the process, with whom you are meeting, and what is going on with that person on that day. I’ve done 20-minute interviews just to quickly meet a junior candidate that everyone wants to hire. But if a company is interested, they will maintain contact in a timely manner, so the combination of short interview and no response likely means that you are not getting the job. Start putting your efforts elsewhere and try to reflect on what didn’t go well to see if you need to make any adjustments for the next job interview.
