Jets aim to fly even higher at Mile High

DENVER — Things have flipped for the Jets in just six weeks.

They have gone from being a team with little expectations around them to one that is now being talked about as a playoff contender. That’s what happens when you start 4-2.

Now, the Jets travel to face the Broncos (2-4), who have lost three straight games. The Jets have won three straight and are trying to win their fourth consecutive game for the first time since 2015.

“That’s crazy how that happens,” wide receiver Corey Davis said, “because everybody was just talking crazy about us — same old Jets, whatever it is. Now they’re saying we’ve got to stay humble, which we will. We’ve got the right group of guys in here that will keep these young dudes humble. But I don’t see anything about us being arrogant or cocky. We’ve still got work to do.”

It was not all positive vibes around the team this week, despite its strong start and a big win over the Packers last week. Wide receiver Elijah Moore threw a tantrum Thursday over his role and was sent home. He later requested a trade and will not play Sunday.

The Jets don’t believe Moore’s situation will be a distraction that derails them, but it could affect the offense.

The Broncos are still trying to put things together on offense themselves. Russell Wilson has been a disappointment so far in his first season and was ruled out of Sunday’s game with a hamstring injury. Brett Rypien will start. Denver is the lowest-scoring team in the league at 15.2 points per game. Still, the Jets expect the Broncos to break out at some point. They just hope it is not Sunday.

“They’ve got talent all over the place,” Jets defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins said. “Obviously, they haven’t been operating on the level of success that they would like to. … They have all the tools. It’s on us to make sure this isn’t the week that they can get that thing rolling and start putting up points and making those type of plays.”

A win would make the Jets 5-2, which would be their best start since 2010, the last season they went to the playoffs. It would also set up two big home games against division rivals over the next two weeks, when the Patriots and Bills both will come to MetLife Stadium.

The Jets have expectations in late October for the first time in a long time.
