SPORTS SHORTS NHL: Devils rally to beat Kings

Red-hot Dawson Mercer scored his second goal of the game 2:30 into overtime and the Devils rallied late to beat the Kings 4-3 on Thursday night at Prudential Center in Newark.

Tomas Tatar and Nico Hischier also scored for the Devils, with Hischier netting the tying goal with 38 seconds left in regulation. The Devils had rallied from a 3-2 deficit after Sean Durzi scored for the Kings with 4:19 left to play in regulation.

In Tampa, Fla., Ilya Lyubushkin scored a short-handed goal 1:41 into overtime, helping Tage Thompson and the Sabres win 6-5 over the Lightning. Thompson netted his fourth hat trick of the season.

In Seattle, Jake DeBrusk scored with 1:38 left in regulation and the Bruins rallied from a two-goal deficit in the third period to defeat the Kraken 6-5.

HOOPS: 76ers get past Grizzlies

Tobias Harris sank the go-ahead 3-pointer with 39 seconds left, James Harden scored 31 points, and Joel Embiid had 27 points and 19 rebounds to help the 76ers storm back and beat the Grizzlies 110-105 in Philadelph­ia.

In Indianapol­is, Jayson Tatum scored 31 points, including the final four in the last minute of overtime, and the Celtics outlasted the Pacers 142-138.

In Cleveland, Nikola Jokic had 24 points, 18 rebounds and 13 assists for his NBAleading 22nd triple-double, leading the Nuggets to a 115-109 victory over the Cavaliers.

In Los Angeles, Malik Beasley scored 25 points and Austin Reaves added 17 as the new-look Lakers earned a 124-111 victory over the Warriors.

The Hawks has begun discussing their vacant head coaching job with former Jazz head coach Quin Snyder and “are attempting to hire Snyder swiftly,” according to The Athletic.

In Piscataway, Michigan rallied from an early 10-point deficit to earn a 58-45 win over Rutgers. Cam Spencer paced Rutgers (17-11, 9-8 Big 10) with 11 points and seven rebounds.

In Champaign, Ill., Terrence Shannon Jr. scored 24 of his 26 points in the second half as Illinois rallied from an 18-point halftime deficit to beat No. 21 Northweste­rn 66-62.
