NCAA: Texas Tech suspends coach

Texas Tech suspended coach Mark Adams on Sunday over “an inappropri­ate, unacceptab­le, and racially insensitiv­e comment” he made to a player. Athletic director Kirby Hocutt said he was made aware of the incident Friday and issued a written reprimand before deciding to suspend Adams to investigat­e further.

In West Lafayette, Ind., Brandon Newman scored a season-high 19 points as No. 5 Purdue held on to beat Illinois 76-71 to become the first Big Ten team since 2014 to win the league title by three or more games.

In Bloomingto­n, Ind., Trayce Jackson Davis had 27 points, nine rebounds and six assists in his final home game, and No. 15 Indiana forced a steal on Michigan’s final possession to seal a 75-73 overtime victory.

In Piscataway, sophomore guard Brooks Barnhizer came off the bench to score 16 points and grab 10 rebounds for his first career double-double, leading Northweste­rn to a 65-53 victory over Rutgers.

In Memphis, Tenn., Jamal Shead scored 16 points, including the winning basket as time ran out, and top-ranked Houston escaped a second-half rally by Memphis for a 67-65 win in the regular-season finale.

In St. Louis, Mo., Tucker DeVries scored 22 points and second-seeded Drake raced to its sixth NCAA Tournament berth with a 77-51 romp past top-seeded Bradley in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament championsh­ip game.

In Kennesaw, Ga., Terrell Burden scored 19 points and made a free throw with less than a second left to rally Kennesaw State to a 67-66 victory over Liberty, earning the Bulldogs their first Atlantic Sun Conference championsh­ip and their first trip to the NCAA Tournament.

In Washington, Keenan Fitzmorris scored 18 points, but it wasn’t enough as Stony Brook was ousted by College of Charleston, 74-52, from the quarterfin­als of the Colonial Athletic Associatio­n Tournament.

SOCCER: Liverpool blasts Man U.

Liverpool brought Manchester United crashing down to earth with a stunning 7-0 rout at Anfield on Sunday in the visitors’ worst competitiv­e defeat in more than 90 years. Only a week after winning the League Cup, United experience­d its biggest defeat in the Premier League and the club’s joint-worst loss in all competitio­ns.

United has lost 7-0 on three previous occasions — the last time coming in 1931 against Wolverhamp­ton. The score also eclipsed Liverpool’s previous best victory against United, which was a 7-1 win in 1895. ETC: Canes blank Lightning in rout

In Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, Colombian rookie Nico Echavarria seized control with two straight birdies on the back nine and closed with a 4-under 68 for a two-shot victory in the Puerto Rico Open for his first PGA Tour title.

In Tucson, Ariz., David Toms got upand-down for his third bogey of the week on the par-4 18th hole at Tucson National to beat Robert Karlsson by one stroke in the Cologuard Classic on the PGA Tour Champions.

In Singapore, Jin Young Ko held off an early charge from Nelly Korda and closed with a 3-under 69 for a two-shot victory in the HSBC Women’s World Championsh­ip, her first victory in a year.

In Las Vegas, William Byron took the lead on the second-to-last lap of overtime to win the NASCAR Cup Series race.
