Judge part of Giants’ pitch to Nimmo

- By MIKE PUMA

SAN FRANCISCO — It never got to the point he thought he was going to the Giants, but Brandon Nimmo was impressed with the pitch he received from team officials in the offseason.

Nimmo confirmed to The Post on Friday he received an offer from the Giants in December after a four-hour meeting in Los Angeles that included president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi, general manager Pete Putila and manager Gabe Kapler just before the winter meetings. Part of the Giants’ pitch to Nimmo was the possibility of playing alongside Aaron Judge, another free agent the team was pursuing.

“They were saying they wanted to sign both of us,” Nimmo said before he went 2-for-4 in the Mets’ 7-0 win over the Giants at Oracle Park. “They needed two outfielders. I remember having that conversation, we went through that depth chart, because we were talking about the Dodgers being a pain in their side and this would really help.”

At that point Nimmo still hadn’t heard from the Mets, who were focused on rebuilding the starting rotation and within days would sign Justin Verlander and Jose Quintana. The Giants had a chance — until Mets owner Steve Cohen stepped up with an eight-year contract worth $162 million that locked up Nimmo the day after he received his offer from the Giants.

By then the Giants had already missed on Judge, who returned to the Yankees on a nine-year deal worth $360 million.

Arriving at Oracle Park for the start of this four-game series, Nimmo said he reflected briefly on his courtship by the Giants.

“It was more of the Mets hadn’t talked to me,” Nimmo said. “They hadn’t talked to us and the Giants were really interested, so I was like, ‘Let’s be serious about this, [the Mets] might not give us an offer.’ We had to take all these other options very seriously.”

Starling Marte missed a second straight start with neck soreness, but Showalter is hopeful the veteran outfielder will return to the lineup Saturday. Marte indicated his neck had improved and he could “probably” pinch hit if needed on Friday.

John Curtiss was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse and Joey Lucchesi was recalled to start against the Giants. Curtiss, who has pitched to a 4.35 ERA in nine relief appearances, indicated to Showalter he plans to work on his changeup.
