Peterson poised for recall

- By MIKE PUMA

PHILADELPHIA — David Peterson’s initial stint with the Mets this season went badly, but with a need in the rotation and no obvious answers, the left-hander will now receive another chance.

The Mets intend to recall Peterson from Triple-A Syracuse to start Tuesday against the Brewers at Citi Field. Peterson went 1-6 with an 8.08 ERA in his eight starts for the Mets before his demotion.

At Syracuse, he has pitched to a 4.86 ERA in seven starts this season. In his last outing for Syracuse, he pitched six innings and allowed three earned runs with seven strikeouts.

Buck Showalter indicated team officials discussed the possibility of recalling Joey Lucchesi for the spot, but the peripheral numbers strengthened Peterson’s case. The vacancy exists after Tylor Megill was optioned to Syracuse last week.

“I know what [Peterson] wasn’t doing here that he needed to get better at and I hope he has,” Showalter said. “The big thing is command.”

Justin Verlander will open the series against the Brewers on Monday. Kodai Senga will start on four days’ rest for the second time this season Wednesday.

The Mets entered the season counting on Peterson and Megill to provide quality rotation depth, but both have scuffled. Showalter said a point of emphasis for Peterson has been trying to regain the slider that previously helped him succeed.

“I think the thing that bothered him is so many counts that got away from him in three pitches,” Showalter said. “You just can’t pitch up here and have that be the case.”

➤ Jose Quintana pitched four innings (47 pitches) in a minor league rehab start for High-A Brooklyn. The left-hander allowed one earned run on two hits with one walk and four strikeouts. The rehab start was Quintana’s third since undergoing bone-graft surgery on a rib in spring training. It’s expected he will need at least one additional start in the minors before he’s considered ready for the Mets rotation.

➤ The Mets claimed righthanded pitcher Reed Garrett off waivers from the Orioles and assigned him to Triple-A Syracuse.

➤ Elieser Hernandez began a rehab assignment with Brooklyn. The right-hander pitched one inning of scoreless relief and struck out two for the Cyclones.
