50%: He stinks

Sen. John Fetterman is struggling in more ways than one.

The Pennsylvania Democrat, who continues to deal with the effects of a stroke he suffered last year, is underwater with voters back home, according to a new poll. The Quinnipiac University survey found that 50% of Keystone State voters disapprove of Fetterman’s job performance, while just 39% approve. Another 10% said they had no opinion.

Fetterman, 53, has a similar job approval rating among Pennsylvanians to President Biden, with 57% disapproving of the commander in chief. By contrast, Fetterman’s fellow Senate Democrat, Bob Casey, has a positive net job-approval rating (44% approve, 32% disapprove, 24% no opinion).

Trump in tie

Pennsylvania’s Democratic governor, Josh Shapiro, also gets high marks from his constituents, with 57% of voters approving of his work and just 23% disapproving.

The poll also shows former President Donald Trump narrowly leading Biden, 47% to 46%, in a rematch of the hard-fought 2020 election.

Fetterman suffered a stroke shortly before his Democratic primary victory in May 2022, which left him affected by a speech impediment and auditory processing issues.

Despite his poor health, Fetterman defeated Republican candidate Dr. Mehmet Oz in last year’s midterm election, helping Democrats keep control of the Senate until at least January 2025.

Weeks after his swearing-in, Fetterman checked himself into Walter Reed Medical Center after feeling light-headed during a Senate Democratic retreat. He was released days later but returned the following week to receive treatment for clinical depression.

“It was after the brutality of the campaign,” Fetterman told KDKA-TV in May. “Some people believe that it was one of the most vicious political campaigns.”
