MLB: Ohtani homers again

Eloy Jiménez and Zach Remillard had two-run singles in the third inning and the White Sox beat Los Angeles 9-7, overcoming Shohei Ohtani’s Angels-record 14th homer in June. Ohtani hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning and leads the majors with 29 homers.

In Boston, Jean Segura’s infield single broke up Brayan Bello’s no-hit bid with nobody out in the eighth inning, and the Marlins followed with three more hits to break a scoreless tie and beat the Red Sox 2-0.

In Chicago, Bryce Harper delivered a tiebreakin­g, two-run single in the third inning as the Phillies recorded their ninth straight road win, 3-1, over the Cubs.

In Toronto, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a two-run homer, Chris Bassitt struck out a career-high 12 over six shutout innings and the Blue Jays beat the Giants 2-1.

In St. Louis, Kyle Tucker homered and drove in five runs, Alex Bregman hit his third grand slam this season and the Astros blew out the Cardinals 14-0.

In Phoenix, Luke Raley homered in the first inning, Wander Franco and Josh Lowe drove in two runs each in a five-run third and the Rays beat the Diamondbac­ks 6-1.

NBA: Irving plans to meet Suns

Kyrie Irving plans to meet with the Suns when free agency opens Friday, multiple outlets reported. TNT reported that the eight-time All-Star point guard will also sit down with the Mavericks and potentiall­y the Rockets, with the meetings taking place in Los Angeles.

Veteran forward Harrison Barnes is staying with the Kings, agreeing to a threeyear, $54 million contract, according to a person with knowledge of the negotiatio­ns told the Associated Press.

Spurs guard Devonte’ Graham has pleaded guilty to a driving while intoxicate­d charge stemming from a July 2022 speeding stop. The Wake County (N.C.) District Attorney’s office confirmed the deal Thursday, adding the speeding charge was dismissed. A spokeswoma­n at the DA’s office said the deal was made earlier in the week but she did not know the exact day.

The Patriots and linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley are in agreement on a two-year contract extension worth $18.75 million, NFL Network reported. The deal includes $9 million fully guaranteed for Bentley, 26, who started all 17 games for the Patriots in 2022, racking up a career-high 125 tackles.

GOLF: Co-leaders top Rocket Classic Taylor Moore and Monday qualifier Peter Kuest shot 8-under 64s to share the first-round lead in the Rocket Mortgage Classic on Thursday in Detroit, with a slew of players chasing in what’s expected to be a shootout. Dylan Wu shot 65, joining Sam Ryder, Aaron Rai, Ludvig Aberg, Sam Bennett, Justin Suh and Adam Schenk.

In Stevens Point, Wis., Australia’s Rod Pampling opened with two birdies and went on to hold a two-shot lead after the first round of the U.S. Senior Open. Mike Small, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Retief Goosen share second place at 70.

In Sutton Coldfield, England, Justin Rose set the pace in the first round of the British Masters with a 7-under 65.

HOCKEY: Women’s hockey unified

Profession­al women’s hockey in North America was unified when a co-owner of the Dodgers, Mark Walter, struck a deal with the Premier Hockey Federation, two people with direct knowledge of the agreement told the AP. The deal will result in a new women’s hockey league that is projected to launch in January. The federation had been locked into a dispute with the rival Profession­al Women’s Hockey Players’ Associatio­n.
