Gambling costs Colts their jobs

The Colts have released a pair of players who were ensnared in the NFL’s gambling crackdown.

Cornerback Isaiah Rodgers and defensive end Rashod Berry were both hit with indefinite suspensions Thursday that encompass at least the entire 2023-24 season, and the Colts’ organization has chosen to move on from the players rather than hold on to their rights until the disciplinary period concludes.

“We have made the following roster moves as a consequence of determination that these players violated the league’s gambling policy,” Colts general manager Chris Ballard said in a statement.

“The integrity of the game is of the utmost importance. As an organization, we will continue to educate our players, coaches, and staff on the policies in place and the significant consequences that may occur with violations.”

ESPN reported that Rodgers placed bets at the behest of friends who lived in Florida, where sports betting is not legal.

Rodgers was said to have mostly bet in the $25-$50 range, but he also reportedly placed a $1,000 bet on a player prop wager for a Colts running back’s rushing total — and won the bet.

It had been previously reported that Rodgers was under investigation for violating the league’s gambling policy.

Rodgers had nine starts in 15 appearances for the Colts last season.

Berry has played in eight games in his career, with the Patriots and Lions, and did not appear in an NFL game last season.

The NFL also announced a suspension Thursday morning for Titans tackle Nicholas PetitFrere, who will miss six games after it was determined he bet on sports outside the NFL, but from the team facility, which is prohibited.
