HS kids seek end to gender-neutral loos
Dozens of students held a walkout over gender bathroom policies in Loudoun County, the progressive Virginia district that became a hotbed of protest on the issue after a pupil was sexually assaulted in the girls’ room by a boy in a skirt.
Pupils at Woodgrove HS in Purcellville walked out of their classes Wednesday to express their opposition to Policy 8040, which allows transgender, nonbinary and gender-fluid children to use bathrooms and locker rooms of their choice.
The Loudoun County school board voted 7-2 to adopt the rule in 2021 — but students say they want a return to female- and male-only bathrooms, WJLA reported.
Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin praised the “large group of students” Friday for “standing up, saying you are not respecting our privacy and our safety” — something he wants those with a vote to take note of.
“The entire Loudoun County School Board is up for election on Tuesday and I encourage the Loudoun County voters to get out and make your voice heard,” the Republican told Fox News.
‘They don’t listen’
“I have a real sense that they don’t listen to anybody other than their progressive-left friends,” he said of the current leadership.
“Just 24 months ago, Virginia was totally controlled by the progressive left and the state was lost. And in 24 short months, I believe commonsense conservative policies have allowed it to be found.”
Many of the students taking part in the walkout insisted the vast majority of kids in district schools were against the current bathroom policy, which has left them feeling unsafe.
A female student told WJLA that she stopped using the bathroom because of the policy, calling it a “massive safety risk.”
“We’re not crazy,” she said. “We just don’t want to be in danger on a daily basis in this building.”
The district told the outlet the policy was “in review.”
Loudoun County became the scene of protest in the wake of a 15-year-old boy being found guilty in 2021 of sexually assaulting a ninth-grade girl in the bathroom of another county high school while he was wearing a skirt.
