‘GMA’ looks glum vs. ‘Mornings’

-

ABC News is having some rough mornings. As “CBS Mornings” is gaining on the network’s top morning show, “Good Morning America,” we’re hearing ABC execs are in a panic amid buzz that top boss Kim Godwin may be on her way out.

“GMA” has faced its share of behind-thescenes issues — particularly involving the “GMA3” anchors T.J. Holmes and Amy Robach’s affair and ouster — but no one expected the network to start off the year with “CBS Mornings” beating “GMA” in key demographics.

On Monday, the p.r. machine behind the Gayle King-fronted show boasted of being No. 1 last week among men ages 25 to 54, as well as beating “GMA” with women 25 to 54 on Wednesday.

The ratings dip has only added fuel to the ongoing rumor that Godwin may soon not be around as president.

A source confirmed the company is deciding whether or not to re-sign Godwin when her contract expires this spring. A rep did not comment by our deadline.

It’s becoming the norm for CBS News to boast of wins over “GMA” on a weekly basis. One source told us CBS is winning because King has been booking her own big interviews, including with bestie Oprah Winfrey, who was promoting “The Color Purple.”

It didn’t hurt that the network aired the

Golden Globes, the Grammys and Sunday night’s Taylor Swift-ified Super Bowl — which gives its morning show first dibs on exclusive behind-the-scenes access.

Another insider sneered at the idea of the network being “in a panic” over the thirdrated “CBS Mornings,” telling us, “The word ‘panic’ would not be accurate . . . No one’s panicking. It’s healthy competition. There’s ebb and flow. ‘GMA’ is still in first place and continues to be No. 1 in total viewers.”

An ABC News spokesperson said when reached for comment: “There is no panic. GMA is still number one and has been for 12 seasons in a row.”
