Sharpe on cusp of return

Day’Ron Sharpe is the latest injured Net who’s set to return.

Sharpe is set to play Tuesday against the Celtics after being out since Jan. 7 with left knee hypertension.

And from what he’s seen, he’s looking forward to playing with new addition Dennis Schroder, who can also split time at point guard with Dennis Smith Jr.

“You know they’re gonna pass the ball to the bigs,’’ Sharpe said of the duo. “I’m just ready to play with the other Dennis [Schroder] to get a feel for him, too.”

Sharpe is confident Schroder’s experience, coupled with that of Smith Jr., will be valuable.

“I just feel like he gives me the same vibe that Dennis Smith gives me,’’ Sharpe said. “Play hard, make the right play, try to win.”

Head coach Jacque Vaughn said Sharpe will be on a minutes restriction, but expects chemistry to build between Sharpe and Schroder.

“It’s interesting, just because you saw what Dennis can do from the point guard position and whether he was, the connection he had with Nic, which will need to grow that, also,’’ Vaughn said. “But Day’Ron gives us the ability to be in different coverages, as well. So we’ll see how that fits. We’ve got a little bit of makeup ground as far as figuring out on both ends of the floor.”

Prior to his injury, Sharpe was averaging 7.5 points and seven rebounds. Both numbers are career highs for the third-year center.

Cam Johnson

(left adductor strain) remains out for Tuesdays’ game, but he was able to do some work during practice. Vaughn said Johnson is taking “positive steps.”

As Vaughn grows accustomed to his new roster, he said he’ll continue to maneuver different rotations.

“I think going into the game, we definitely have scripted ‘What are the best combinations?’ ” Vaughn said. “I think it’s always vital to feel the pulse of the game … [and deal with] those things that happen over the course of the game that you’ve got to adjust to.”
