Biden Speaks Out at Last

THE ISSUE: President Biden’s condemnation of antisemitism on Holocaust Remembrance Day.

- Brooklyn

It was heartwarming to see the marking of Holocaust Remembrance Day at the Capitol with President Biden as the keynote speaker (“Back up your words, Biden!” May 8).

It was also gratifying to see US House Speaker Mike Johnson in attendance. He added his thoughts and made clear his solidarity with the Jewish community.

Any notion that our president is feeble was dispelled as he powerfully addressed those gathered.

He noted the hatred that has been inflicted

on Jews virtually from the beginning of time, and its ugly resurgence. He referenced the Holocaust and the modernday savagery inflicted by Hamas on innocent Israeli civilians.

Biden later went over to the Holocaust survivors and addressed them with his trademark compassion and empathy.

It is difficult to imagine many leaders who could mirror his basic human decency. Oren Spiegler

As a critic of President Biden, I was pleasantly surprised with his speech.

For the first time I heard him refer to Israel as a Jewish state. Good for Biden.

I am sure the comments referring to Israel as a Jewish state will not be taken well by the likes of Bernie Sanders and the Squad.

Hopefully, this marks a shift in policy for the Biden administration.
