Jenkintown cruises past Faith Christian

- By Nick Iuele

With the Bicentennial League’s Constitution Division locked up and the BAL Tournament just a day away, Jenkintown used their game against Faith Christian as a tune-up. The Lady Drakes look pretty good.

Jenkintown routed Faith Christian 65-20, led by bmma Dorshimer’s 20 points. The Lady Drakes pressed early and often, while successfully attacking the rim on offense. Jenkintown had a 20-point lead midway through the second quarter and never looked back.

“We have a big game to- morrow night,” Jenkintown coach Jim Romano said. “But it was a nice game for us, a good little warm up. I got a chance to get everyone in the game, so hopefully I got some people ready for the tournament.”

This game was scheduled for Friday night, but was moved to Monday due to the snow. Although it forced the Lady Drakes to play a game one day before the start of the conference tournament, it also gave Romano a chance to see who is in the best form heading into the post season.

If anyone made the most of her minutes on the floor, it was Morrin McSherry. The Jenkintown freshman dropped 10 points in a rare start, showing that she is cer- tainly ready for some serious minutes in the tournament. Along with Sarah Ross and Sarah Owens, McSherry just adds to the Jenkintown front-court depth rivaled by few in the BAL.

“I’ve always said that you have the regular season, but the playoffs are a different picture,” Romano said. “We are a lot different than in November, people have improved. bveryone starts from scratch, so it brings some competition to the team and that’s been our philosophy at Jenkintown.”

bmma Dillon also had a solid game, putting up eight points, while fellow starter Madison Kremp added six off three buckets in the third quarter. Ten different Lady Drakes scored in the con- test, an indication that no matter who is in the game for Jenkintown, there is always a threat coming off the bench. However, although Jenkintown’s commitment to defense has always been there, Romano would like to see the offensive energy be brought up a bit in the first round against Christopher Dock.

“I still think we need to get Ruby xWestkaemper] on track a little bit, and we need to do better at the free-throw line,” Romano said. “Defensively I thought we were pretty good, but we need more girls to look for their shot. We need to do that in order to be competitive in the playoffs. bveryone needs

to be as aggressive on the defensive end as on the offensive end.”

Faith was led by Rachel Shive, who had 11 points to lead the Lady Lions. Haley Waltenbaugh added five points; the two combined to score more than half the team’s overall points. Faith is a program that is continuing to progress, but they certainly showed some heart in the game.

“We knew were up against a tough opponent in Jenkintown,” Faith coach Dale Moe said. “We can just try to go over stuff tonight for tomorrow’s playoff game.”

Jenkintown appears as ready as they are going to be for the first round. The game will be played at Jenkintown, so the Lady Drakes will have the home-court advantage. There are some that speculate whether or not they are as good as their 18-4 record suggests, but they are ready to prove themselves. Dock beat them at Jenkin- town earlier in the season.

“This group has been together for a long time,” Romano said. “The majority of the kids are ready to go. It’s going to be interesting. Hopefully tomorrow we play well, we’re ready for them.
