Rescuers sift through rubble at Taroko National Park on April 5 after a 7.4-magnitude earthquake two days earlier. At least 13 people were killed—most by falling rocks and landslides—and nearly 1,100 injured in the country’s largest quake in 25 years and its aftershocks. Across the world, on April 5, another, smaller, earthquake of 4.8 magnitude, in New Jersey, surprised the U.S. with tremors from Maine to Maryland.
