HOLLAND: DESTINATION IN BLOOM
Celebrate Dutch heritage in Michigan’s most magical city
On the sandy shoreline of Lake Michigan, combining traditional midwestern hospitality with old-world European charm, the friendly town of Holland is one of the state’s most beloved destinations.
Settled mainly by Dutch immigrants in the 19th century, this historic and attractive city offers something for everyone. Whether it’s families swimming in the lake and building sandcastles on the beaches in the summer, or hikers and cyclists tackling woodland trails in fall and winter, in all seasons of the year visitors come to Holland to rest, relax and rejuvenate.
One of the most popular times to visit is during the famous Tulip Time Festival in late spring, when millions of tulips bloom and the whole-city-celebrates-with-parades,-carnival-floats,-fireworks-andmarching bands. First held in 1929, Tulip Time is the colorful highlight of the Holland calendar, with tens of thousands of spectators coming from-far-and-wide-to-view-the-flowers-and-experience-the-festivities.
Holland offers visitors a wealth of opportunities for exploring Dutch heritage and culture. Popular attractions include Nelis’ Dutch Village, where guests can enjoy traditional fairground rides and try their hand at Dutch dancing and wooden shoe carving. Alongside the Holland Museum and charming Dutch-style houses and churches, the city boasts the only operational Dutch windmill in the US, still grinding-wheat-into-flour-after-all-these-years.
With a vibrant and snow-free downtown area, traditional farmers’ markets, diverse shopping and dining venues and an ever-growing range of hotels to choose from, it is easy to see why Holland is becoming one of the Midwest’s favorite places for a staycation—at any time of the year.
