Marshall County Neighborhood Center served 54 new households in July

Marshall County Neighborhood Center Director Christine “Chris” Garner celebrated 40 years with a neighborhood block party Saturday evening.

The center served 54 new households in July, the biggest month they have seen since April 2020 during the pandemic.

Garner said, “It was the perfect storm. All the extra benefits ended and inflation hit.”

The center needs donations of food, clothes and money to serve those in need. Garner emphasized that it is not just families who have utilized the center’s resources consistently over the years, but includes families who were self sustaining after the pandemic recovery and have been hit by inflation.

Garner did not reach her goal for the “40 in 40 Giving Challenge” which was a robust fundraising drive during the month of July to connect with donors.

It isn’t too late to support the center. Families continue to need more assistance as rising costs strain income.

With the return of students to school, some parents will see increased expenses if they do not qualify for free and reduced lunches. Many families who do not meet those qualification guidelines still struggle to make ends meet, living paycheck to paycheck. Families have to make tough decisions including taking a second job and forsaking time with their children.

Clients are welcome to partake of the food pantry at the center once a month and the clothing pantry twice a month.

Garner and her team offer a variety of programs to help people establish a budget, connect with job opportunities and learn personal leadership development.

The “40 in 40 Challenge” had four tiers. Individuals and businesses are still welcome to commit to any level of support, or create their own initiative.

At $40 a month donors will be providing two food baskets each month for households in need.

A donation to the Permanent Fund in any

amount helps grow resources which enables the center to continue providing needed resources to families.

Market sponsors partner with the center to fight hunger by providing a one time gift of $100 to provide fresh produce.

A monthly monetary donation in any amount by neighborhood partners is greatly appreciated.
