Klein rising to the occasion for UConn

Brandywine Heights grad helps Huskies to 9-0

NINA KLEIN (BRANDYWINE

HEIGHTS) >> The red-shirt junior is in her third year starting in goal for the Connecticu­t women’s soccer team, the Huskies 9-0 and ranked third in the National Field Hockey Coaches Associatio­n poll after a 5-1 victory over Boston University on Sept. 25. Klein has given up eight goals and has three shutouts. She’s only had to make 13 saves including four against Boston.

“Nina continues to play her best against our toughest foes,” coach Nancy Stevens said. “Although she sees very few shots each game, she does a great job of maintainin­g her focus. In practice, Nina faces some of the top strikers in the country, which helps her to prepare for her competitio­n.”

Last year, Klein had 11 shutouts in 23 games and led the nation in goals against average (0.62) as the Huskies made it to the NCAA semifinals before losing 3-1 to Syracuse. She was named to the All-Mideast Region and All-Big East first team and was named to the NCAA All-Tournament team. TYLER EMGE (FLEETWOOD)

>> The 6-foot, 210-pound sophomore is starting at linebacker for the 3-1 Shippensbu­rg football team. He has 16 tackles, including 10 solos, with 3.5 tackles for losses of nine yards and a sack. He had a season-high six tackles in a 24-20 loss to Gannon on Sept. 10. Emge had 35 tackles, including 22 solos and 3.5 for losses, with a forced fumble as a true freshman for the Raiders last season. ALYSSA MOSER (BRANDYWINE HEIGHTS) >> The sophomore back scored her first collegiate goal for the UMass-Lowell field hockey team in a 3-2 loss to Holy Cross on Sept. 9. She got her second in a 9-2 victory over St. Louis

on Sept. 18. Moser has started all seven games for the 3-4 River Hawks and is third on the team in minutes played (437). She played in 13 games with 10 starts as a freshman and missed the only shot she attempted. BLAKE ROBERTS (HAMBURG)

>> The 5-foot-11, 280-pound junior is starting at right guard on offense for the Wesley football team, which stands 1-2 after a 42-28 loss to Christophe­r Newport on Sept. 17. In the team’s only victory, a 43-7 triumph over Frostburg State, the Wolverines had 396 yards in total offense. Off on Sept. 24, the

team returns to action his Saturday at Southern Virginia. MASON KLOPP (TULPEHOCKE­N) >> The freshman kicked off the season by being the top finisher for the Waynesburg men’s cross country team at the Grove City Kickoff on Sept. 1. His 5K time was 16:52.44. He finished 30th out of 114 runners in the Bethany Invitation­al on Sept. 10 in Bethany, W.Va. with an 8K time of 30:37. Klopp improved his 8K time (30:24) when he finished 67th out of 217 runners in the Saint Vincent Invitation­al on Sept. 17.
