New super preps for school year

Fleetwood continues focus on increasing student’s use of technology

- By Dr. Greg M. Miller, Ed.D. Fleetwood Area School District Superintendent

Editor’s Note: Dr. Miller has been the new superintendent of Fleetwood Area School District since July 1, after Dr. Paul Eaken retired.

“I hope to just continue with the high level of support and student success that Fleetwood has known and consistency. Dr. Eaken has been there a number of years and my goal truly is to continue on that same path. I’m very excited. I am a community member. I’ve been living in Fleetwood School District for 13 years now . My kids go to Fleetwood so it’s just a great opportunity to be a member and to help support the community that I am an active member of.”

On Wednesday, August 23, 2017, the Fleetwood Area School District will be welcoming 2,445 students to the start of the 2017-18 school year.

As in the past, students and families can expect a concentrated effort to provide the appropriate educational resources and experiences to empower all students to cultivate knowledge and develop the desire to learn life-long skills. The district is continuing the focus of increasing students’ use of technology. Starting this year, all students in grades 6-8 will have access to the Discovery Science Techbook. The Discovery Science Techbook is a resource that will provide students the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of science through the application of scientific practices and disciplinary literacy skills. It provides virtual labs, videos, photographs and nearly 2,000 hands-on labs. The activities engage students to understand the relevance of science in their daily lives. Additionally, the Fleetwood Area School District is developing a multiyear instructional technology plan. The plan will map out identified cohort of teachers who will engage in professional learning and coaching support focused on integrating technology to transform teaching and learning.

In addition to the initiatives outlined above we would like to remind parents and guardians of upcoming opportunities to meet their child’s teachers:

Andrew Maier Elementary: Kindergarten August 16 at 6 p.m.; Grades 1-4 August 24 at 6:30 p.m.

Fleetwood Area Middle School: Grades 5-8 August 21 at 5 p.m.

As the superintendent of the Fleetwood Area School District, I would like to wish everyone a successful school year.
