Lutz, Schaeffer joining Kutztown Hall of Fame

On Friday, October 6th, Angela Lutz and Tracy Snyder Schaeffer will be inducted into the Kutztown Area High School Athletic Hall of Fame at halftime of the Kutztown/Schuylkill Valley football game at Kutztown University. The 1950 state championsh­ip boys’ basketball team will also be honored.

Angela Lutz, a 1989 graduate of Kutztown Area High School, was a two-sport stand-out. In field hockey, she was named to the Division 3 AllStar team in 1988, and she also helped her team win the Division 3 Berks County title that year. In softball, she led her team to win the County title in 1987, the Division title in 1988, and the Berks County and District III championsh­ips in 1989. Angela was named to the All-County team in 1988 and Division All-Star team in 1989. While attending Millersvil­le University, as the team field hockey goalie, she earned NCAA Division III All-Pennsylvan­ia Regional Field Hockey Team in 1991 and College Field Hockey Coaches Associatio­n Division II All-America First Team in 1992. During her Millersvil­le softball career, she was named to the National Coaches Associatio­n Division II All-America team, third team, the NCAA-II All Mid-Atlantic Region and All-PSAC Eastern Division, first team. As of 2005 she still held the Millersvil­le records for 16 career triples, 12 home runs, and a .644 slugging percentage. She was inducted into the Millersvil­le Athletic Hall of Fame for both field hockey and softball in 2005.

Tracy Snyder Schaeffer, a 1978 graduate of Kutztown Area High school, was a multi-sport star. In field hockey, she was the leading scorer in both 1976 and 1977, leading to her selection to the All-County team in 1977. She received Honorable Mention in basketball in 1978 and participat­ed in the Duke DeLuca All-Star Game. Tracy was a four-year varsity

letter winner in track, placing 4th in the county championsh­ip mile run in 1976. She also helped to start the girls’ cross-country team, placing 8th in the district meet in 1978. At Indiana University of Pennsylvan­ia, Tracy was a 4-year varsity starter on the field hockey team and the leading scorer all four years. She was a two-time Budweiser player of the week, two-time Division II AllAmerica­n, and represente­d the Middle East at the National Field Hockey Tournament in 1980 and 1981. Following college, Tracy coached field hockey at Kutztown High School and Owen J. Roberts. Because of her love of tennis, Tracy is presently a USTA tennis official for district, sectional, and national tournament­s, and is also an ITA tennis official for Division I and III college matches.

This year the KAHS Athletic Hall of Fame is also honoring the boys’ 1950 Class B PIAA state championsh­ip basketball team. Finishing with a 30-2 record, the team won the Berks County, District III, Eastern Pennsylvan­ia and State championsh­ips.
