Ex-trooper sentenced for assault of girl, 15
A former state trooper from Mertztown with a history of sexual assault convictions has been sentenced in Berks County Court to 5 to 10 years in a state prison for sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl.
Michael Evans, 53, of the 600 block of State Street was sentenced June 25 by
Judge Paul M. Yatron.
Evans pleaded guilty Aug. 15 to indecent assault, indecent exposure and corruption of minors.
Evans made national headlines when he was sentenced in 2000 to five to 10 years in prison followed by 10 years of probation for a series of sexual assaults of teens while on the job as a law enforcement officer in Montgomery County.
Prosecutors gave this account of the Berks case:
Between June 1 and Aug. 31, 2018, Evans requested an adult female take photographs of the victim under the guise he was going to submit them to a modeling agency.
On multiple occasions he photographed the victim and on one occasion she was only wearing underwear. He then engaged in a sexual act with the adult female and fondled the victim.
His sentence will begin after he finishes serving a 2½- to 5-year sentence in another case, and will be followed by four years of special probation.
He was found to meet the criteria of a sexually violent predator and will be required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life.
Evans had been a trooper but was removed from duty because of his convictions in 2000 for indecent assault, corruption of minors, official oppression and other offenses in Montgomery County. He was still serving a probationary sentence at the time of his current offense and was resentenced for the probation violation on Dec. 3.
He had been in Berks County Prison since Aug. 31, 2018, awaiting action in the Berks case.
