Jeff and Jena Shontz purchased the CrossFit gym in Boyertown, known as Proven Fitness CrossFit Fidelity, in June. The couple has since rebranded the gym as Bear’s Den Fitness.

After painting, organizing and updating the gym programming, Bear’s Den Fitness hosted a ribbon cutting event along with Building a Better Boyertown and the BerksMont Business Association in September.

“The ribbon cutting was such a special moment for our family. We felt so proud, accomplished and excited; proud of the rebranding and reimaging,” said Jeff. “Accomplished in seeing all the hard work we put in over the past three months come together and result in a gym we are honored to call ours.”

“Being surrounded by our family, friends, members of the gym, and members of the community made the moment so special,” he added.

Bear’s Den Fitness offers traditional CrossFit programming and added a new Sweat program as well as two separate CrossFit Kids classes, one for fourth to eighth graders and the other for ages 6 through third grade.

“The reaction from the community has been amazing,” said Jeff.

“We’ve received a lot of positive feedback and congratulations,” he continued. “All of the changes we made to the gym have been well received and members have shared their appreciation for all of the improvements that have been done.”

For the past five years, Jeff and his wife have been the community coordinators for the Healthy Kids Running Series of Boyertown. He is currently the race director for the Boyertown Turkey Trot along with the Boyertown Area Multi-Service Wellness Council team.

“I’ve always been into fitness and both Jena and I enjoy being a part of the Boyertown community,” said Jeff. “I also enjoy helping others to achieve their goals and I knew I could help so many people in Boyertown.”

Jeff joined the existing gym in 2019 and immediately fell in love with CrossFit. He enjoys the combination of weightlifting and conditioning.

When the opportunity to purchase the gym opened up, the couple immediately went for it.

“We knew we could improve the look and programming of the gym and be a great resource for the community,” said Jeff.

What they hope to provide to the Boyertown community is connection.

“We want the gym to be a place where people can come to work out and also connect with others,” said Jeff. “We want to show that CrossFit is for everyone, and we also want to introduce other options, such as HIIT classes, yoga, kids free play, and more. We want to provide options for the whole family.”

Jeff, along with the gym’s two inhouse coaches, received their CrossFit Level 1 certificates. He also obtained a CrossFit Kids certificate.

“We love coaching and our group classes allow us to coach and be involved with each and every athlete at the gym,” said Jeff.

They made numerous changes to rebrand the gym.

“We’ve changed almost everything. We renamed the gym to reflect our involvement in the community, designed a new logo, and updated just about every square inch of the gym,” said Jeff.

Outside the gym they applied a new coat of paint and added a new sign. Inside they painted the main gym area, the office, and had a local artist paint “The Den” mural on the entrance wall.

They added lockers for storage, a seating area in the main gym, and a meeting area in the office. There are plans to add a changing room as well.

“We designed shirts, sweatshirts, and stickers so everyone can show their Bear’s Den Fitness pride,” said Jeff.

They also updated the programming for the CrossFit class and now have a CrossFit Kids and Sweat class, as well as have plans to add a few more programs in the near future, including yoga and kids free play programs.

“Bear’s Den Fitness is a gym for the community. We offer group classes where everyone is welcome, no matter what level of experience or ability you have. We are your accountability partner and we will provide motivation so that you can achieve your goals,” he said.

The gym offers group classes and personal training. The CrossFit class includes Olympic lifting, conditioning, and gymnastic movements. The SWEAT class is a total body fat-burning class with interval training. CrossFit Kids class is for kids ages 6 through eighth grade and focuses on making fitness fun. Discounts are available for families, teachers, military, seniors, students, and first responders. The gym offers a free 7-day trial for adult classes.

Jeff and Jena look forward to meeting new members from the community and watching the gym grow.

“We have new members signing up each week and we are excited for many more to join the Bear’s Den family.”

Bear’s Den Fitness thanks the community for their support and thanks Building a Better Boyertown and the Berks-Mont Business Association for attending the ribbon cutting.
