3 Berks bowlers qualify for states

Two Berks boys bowlers and one girls bowler qualified for the stepladder playoffs at the Eastern PA Regional Bowling Championsh­ips Friday to earn berths in the upcoming state championsh­ips.

Antietam senior Ayden Davis and Daniel Boone junior Evan Miller finished in the top 12 after five games of qualifying at Leisure Lanes in Mountville to advance in boys.

Gov. Mifflin sophomore Lily Watts qualified in the top 12 after five games in girls at 222 Dutch Lanes in Ephrata to move on.

Davis, the Berks champ who earned his third straight trip to states, qualified second with a total of 1,188 pins with games of 245, 288, 224, 213 and 218. His 288 was the second-highest game of the day, behind a 289 by Berwick’s Liam Welch.

Davis received a bye into the semifinals, where he lost to 10thseeded and eventual champion Stephen Leslie of Abraham Lincoln 214-210.

Miller qualified 12th at 1,081 with games of 200, 200, 224, 202 and 255. He rolled a 186 in the opening-round quad match and did not advance to the quarterfin­als. Ephrata’s Nathan Barnica, fifth seed, moved on with a 246. Eighthseed­ed Colin Poremba of Truman rolled a 190 and ninth-seeded Mason Smith of York Tech a 184.

Leslie defeated Pennsbury’s Vincent Biehn, the fourth seed, 199-179 in the final.

In the girls tournament, Watts qualified 11th at 970 with games of 201, 162, 191, 252 and 164.

She rolled a 138 in her firstround quad match and did not advance to the quarterfin­als. Twelfthsee­ded Ariana Woodcock of Shikellamy, the eventual champion, moved on with a 230. Eighthseed­ed Lenya Kratzer of Bangor rolled a 196, sixth-seeded Kamryn Brenneman of Central York a 161 and fifth-seeded Eva Brubaker of Penn Manor a 155.

Woodcock defeated seventhsee­ded Taylor Miller of Warwick 178-166 in the final.

Berks champ Frankie Kelly of Muhlenberg was 18th in qualifying at 932 with games of 176, 188, 135, 233 and 200.
