100 YEARS AGO June 18, 1912 Superintendent H. Levinson is having surveys made for a public comfort station for the citizens to be located probably at the foot of Main street, just under the free bridge. Public comfort stations, for the convenience of women especially, are being built in all large cities. It is probable that the council will be asked for an appropriation for this purpose. The plans of public comfort stations provide rest rooms, toilets, wash rooms, etc., with an attendant in charge. 50 YEARS AGO June 18, 1962 PINE BLUFF — Mrs. Daisy Bates, former president of the Little Rock Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People told an audience of Pine Bluff NAACP members yesterday that the so-called reverse freedom rides are “cruel and heartless,” and urged condemnation of the movement by both white and Negro races. Mrs. Bates spoke at a meeting of about 485 state and local NAACP representatives at St. John’s AME Church, where unknown vandals burned a three-foot cross Saturday night. She urged a challenge of segregation in “an organized way,” and said there is no more effective way than through the NAACP. 25 YEARS AGO June 18, 1987 NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Gov. Bill Clinton said Wednesday that before he makes a final decision on whether to enter the presidential race, he must determine whether he has lost too much support by delaying his candidacy. In an interview at the Hyatt Regency here following a speech to the U.S. Conference of Mayors, Clinton said his decision is “not long now.” 10 YEARS AGO June 18, 2002 Evidence mounted Monday that senior members of Gov. Mike Huckabee’s staff discouraged his computer chief from cooperating with legislators, but a Huckabee spokesman said it’s misleading. Randall Bradford, the computer guru who was dismissed last week, released on Monday an April 16 e-mail in which Huckabee Chief of Staff Brenda Turner said, “Frankly, I don’t like the idea of you cozying up to the legislators ... at all. They don’t get oversight unless we give it to them. In fact, I’d prefer that they not have an opinion unless we give it to them.”
