Auburn shakes off 13-point first half

AUBURN, Ala. — Allen Payne and Josh Wallace scored 11 points as Auburn held Alabama scoreless for more than nine minutes in the second half of a 49-37 comeback victory Wednesday night.

The Tigers (9-13, 3-6) ended a six-game losing streak despite managing just 13 points in the first half.

It was a season- low in points for Alabama (14-8, 6-3), which had won 6 of 7 games and five in a row in the rivalry. The Tide’s previous low was 50 points.

Payne scored nine points in the second half. Wallace, who was averaging 3.6 points, matched his season high with all of his points coming in the second half.

Trevor Releford and Rodney Cooper led Alabama with 11 points each.

Georgia’s three-point shooting onslaught as the Bulldogs defeated Tennessee 6862 to win for the fifth time in their past six games. Georgia (11-11, 5-4) shot 11 of 20 from three-point range. CaldwellPo­pe was 5 of 7 from beyond the threepoint line. Kenny Gaines added 12 points and Vincent Williams had 10 points for Georgia, which has won four consecutiv­e conference games for the first time since 2003. Jordan McRae scored 17 points and Jarnell Stokes had 16 points for Tennessee (11-10, 3-6), which never led all night. Stokes also had 11 rebounds. ... Anthony Hickey scored 14 points and LSU hung on for its third consecutiv­e victory, 57-56 over Vanderbilt in Baton Rouge, La. Johnny O’Bryant III added 10 points for the Tigers (13-7, 4-5), who led by as many as 12 early in the second half before Vanderbilt (8-13, 2-7) methodical­ly pulled as close as 55-53 on Rod Odom’s threepoint­er with 10 seconds left. O’Bryant then made two critical free throws for a four-point cushion that rendered Odom’s three-pointer in the final seconds meaningles­s. Odom finished with a game-high 20 points. Dai-Jon Parker added 11 points and nine rebounds for Vanderbilt.

In games involving Top 25 teams, Jake Odum scored 22 points, topping the 1,000-point mark for his career and leading Indiana State past No. 16 Creighton 76-57 in Terre Haute, Ind. It was a huge night for the Sycamores (15-8, 8-4), who beat a ranked team at home for the first time since December 2006. Doug McDermott of Creighton (20-4, 9-3) finished with just eight points, all in the first half, and the nation’s top shooting team was held to 41.7 percent from the field. ... Michael Cobbins blocked a shot and converted a fast-break layup with two-tenths of a second left in overtime, lifting No. 22 Oklahoma State over Baylor 69-67 in Stillwater, Okla.
