SULPHUR SPRINGS — Messenger boys, newsboys and other boy workers who rarely get a holiday are going to have the time of their lives this week camping in the Ozarks. The boys, about 100 or 200 strong, will come down Tuesday in special cars for an eight-day excursion furnished by the Kansas City Boy’s Club and the “good fellows” of that city. The total cost of the trip to each member will only be a dollar, which would go but a little way on paying their railroad fare.

When it came time for Johnny Cash to go on Saturday night at the [Barton] Coliseum, he bounced onto the stage without his guitar, walked back to retrieve it and then broke a string on the first song. Unperturbed, he played on for several songs before giving the guitar up for an unbroken one. The audience of several thousand persons loved it. It was a kind of homecoming for Cash, who has ridden to the top of the country and western music field on the strength of his rich baritone voice backed by a unique guitar and bass beat.

A month after its passage, 53 North Little Rock residents have taken advantage of an ordinance banning the distribution of unsolicited materials to households that do not want them. In a manila folder in City Clerk Mary L. Munns’ office, a list is kept of residents — including Alderman Ray Heck — who have asked that no unsolicited material be thrown in their yard, driveway or porch. The ordinance, which affects every kind of publication except those of a religious or political nature, requires anyone wanting to distribute unsolicited material to obtain a $50 permit every six months.

FORREST CITY — Public officials in this Delta town say the $4 million they’re spending to upgrade city parks and add a multipurpose center to an existing sports complex is an investment in the health of its residents and an incentive to keep them from moving away. The $2.5 million multipurpose center being built along Arkansas 1-South will include an NBA-size basketball court, a weight room, an indoor walking track, a fitness room, a whirlpool, a concession area and classroom space. The city will have the option of adding an indoor pool later. Soon, says Mayor Larry Bryant, the people of Forrest City won’t be able to complain about having no place to exercise.
