LEWISVILLE — The Red river is falling slowly because of rains above. The water still is six feet deep over the broken gas main near here, and officials say repairs cannot be made for several days. Officials of the Little Rock Gas and Fuel Company last night had received no notice of a change in the gas situation near Lewisville. H.L. Snyder, superintendent of the Arkansas Natural Gas Company, is at Texarkana. Other officials of the company said he was to notify them if there was any change and that since he had not done so they presumed the situation is unchanged.

Little Rock experienced substantial increases in murder, forcible rape, aggravated assault and larceny over $50 during the first six months of the year but auto thefts declined markedly, the FBI has announced. The number of stolen cars dropped from 235 for the first six months of 1964 to 178 for the same period this year and Police Chief R.E. Brians attributed it to the creation of a detail assigned only to that crime.

In testament to the significance of a new sewer system for the north Arkansas city of Highland, more than 75 local residents stood in a drizzling rain Monday morning to watch dignitaries ceremoniously toss shovel-loads of dirt. The groundbreaking symbolized the start of construction for a $4.6 million project, which Mayor David Shackelford sees as a catalyst for growth for the Sharp County town of 950. The city will build a sewer plant behind the former Eastern Ozarks Regional Hospital in neighboring Cherokee Village and run low-pressure sewer lines west along U.S. 62.
