100 YEARS AGO Aug. 24, 1916

Truck gardening in the northern section of Arkansas, cotton and other crops were damaged during the last week by the hot, dry weather, according to the weekly weather and crop bulletin issued Wednesday morning from the local office of the United States weather bureau.

50 YEARS AGO Aug. 24, 1966

A new position was added Tuesday to the Little Rock School Board, whose six members have frequently tied 3 to 3 on important matters. The Board voted recently to add a seventh position. It petitioned the Pulaski County Board of Education to approve the position, a step that is required by state law.

25 YEARS AGO Aug. 24, 1991

The proposed legislativ­e redistrict­ing maps released Thursday by the State Board of Apportionm­ent are “a bunch of crap” and will be challenged in federal court by black residents of eastern Arkansas, a state legislator said Friday. Rep. Ben McGee of Marion (Crittenden County) said the maps, which propose the creation of six new non-incumbent legislativ­e districts, do not represent the interest of black Arkansans.

For the past two years, residents of Hollinswor­th Grove have watched as Little Rock National Airport, Adams Field, bought up houses and businesses around the east Little Rock housing project. The airport wants to extend its general-aviation runway and reduce complaints about noise. Hollinswor­th Grove sits just north of the airport, and the Little Rock Housing Authority has long expected the airport to buy the 50-year-old project, too.
