Arkansas cities will co-operate heartily with the Pulaski County Fair Association in its plans for a monster automobile parade October 17 and a farewell reception for the Arkansas-on-Wheels train the same day, according to word received by officers of the association. Pine Bluff, Benton, Star City, Arkadelphia, Conway, Morrilton, Russellville, Lonoke, Carlisle automobile owners and many from other places have written they will take part.

Fire heavily damaged a washateria in the Sherwood Shopping Center at 130 Summit Avenue in Sherwood about 7:30 p.m. Saturday, and damaged a paint-and-hardware store and a barber shop. D. J. Hudson, owner of the center, estimated damage to the building alone at $8,000 to $9,000. The paint and hardware store, leased by Dean White, was damaged by smoke and water, as was the barber shop, whose proprietor is Bob Davis.

City officials said this week they will be seeking legislative approval to create a third division in Little Rock Municipal Court to hear civil, small claims and city ordinance cases — the latter of which could help minimize drug and crime problems. A member of the Downtown Neighborhood Association said in an interview last week that a “separate housing court” would considerably speed the legal process designed to keep houses either in compliance with city codes or declared unsafe and torn down.

Little Rock Zoo director Mike Blakely woke up with a headache Sunday. Sure, he was in Tampa, enjoying blue, sunny skies as he mingled with old friends and colleagues from the zoo world. But hovering over the group was the knowledge that, sometime Sunday afternoon, a nationally recognized commission would decide whether the Little Rock Zoo remains accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. “You go in saying there’s no reason we wouldn’t get accreditation, but you still can’t help but worry,” he explained. And having once gone through the arduous process of getting the zoo re-accredited — after it lost that status in 1998 — Blakely knows better than most not to take anything for granted.
