Terrell leads W. Michigan past Georgia Southern, 49-31

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) — Zach Terrell threw four touchdown passes and Western Michigan won its fourth straight to open the season by beating Georgia Southern 49-31 in a non-conference showdown Saturday night.

Terrell threw three TD passes in the second quarter, including a 37-yard strike to Michael Henry and a 35-yard pass to Corey Davis, and Darius Phillips returned a Georgia Southern kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown to give the Broncos (4-0) a 35-17 advantage at intermissi­on.

Terrell completed 18 of 27 pass attempts for 270 yards and Jamauri Bogan gained 104 yards on 26 carries and scored a touchdown on the ground. Henry finished with eight receptions for 125 yards and two touchdowns.

Favian Upshaw was 4 of 6 for 103 yards passing and two touchdowns to lead Georgia Southern (3-1), but had one pass picked off. Kevin Ellison was 5 of 9 for 65 yards and a touchdown and ran for a team-high 46 yards. …

Appalachia­n State 45, Akron 38: alin Moore ran for a career-high 257 yards and two touchdowns and Appalachia­n State hung on to beat Akron in a 45-38 shootout on Saturday.

The teams combined for 1,073 yards of total offense and 60 first downs.

Taylor Lamb threw for 280 yards and three scores for the Mountainee­rs (2-2), including strikes of 36 and 37-yards to Levi Duffield and Zy Letman.

Thomas Woodson found A.J. Coney on a 23-yard TD pass to give the Zips (2-2) a 14-10 lead midway through the second. But Lamb hit Duffield on the ensuing drive to spark a 21-0 scoring stretch for Appalachia­n State and a 31-14 halftime lead.

The Mountainee­rs never trailed the rest of the way, but a Mykel Traylor-Bennett 1-yard run for Akron cut it to 45-38 with 5:55 left. The Zips had a final drive to tie it, but turned it over on downs.

Woodson had 353 yards passing and three scores for Akron. …

Ohio 37, Gardner-Webb 21: Quinton Maxwell threw two touchdown passes, Greg Windham added another and Ohio used a 30-point first half to beat Gardner-Webb 37-21 on Saturday.

Maxwell was 11 of 14 for 167 yards passing, including a 17-yard scoring strike to Sebastian Smith and a 13-yarder to Kyle Belack. Windham threw for 143 yards, opening the scoring with a 17-yard TD pass to Smith, who had six catches for 108 yards.

The Bobcats (2-2) scored on their first four possession­s, outgained the Bulldogs 341-118 total yards in the first half and led 30-7 at halftime.

Papi White scored on a 14-yard run, Kent Berger sacked Bulldogs quarterbac­k Tyrell Maxwell for a safety, and Bo Hardy scored on a 1-yard run for Ohio.

Khalil Lewis scored on a 31-yard run for the Bulldogs (1-3). Tyrell Maxwell scored on a 3-yard run and hit Willie Jackson IV on a 28-yard scoring pass. …

Western Illinois 28, Northern Illinois 23: Sean McGuire threw for 315 yards and a touchdown, the Western Illinois defense came up with two late stops, and the FCS Leathernec­ks upset Northern Illinois 28-23 on Saturday.

Western Illinois (3-0) snapped a 15-game losing streak against FBS teams. The Leathernec­ks are 7-29 against FBS foes — with all their wins against the Mid-American Conference.

Northern Illinois quarterbac­k Anthony Maddie was stopped short on fourth-and-2 at the Leathernec­ks’ 19-yard line with 2:50 left. On the Huskies next drive, Maddie’s pass attempt on fourth-and-3 at the Leathernec­ks’ 9-yard line was deflected and fell incomplete to preserve the win.

Steve McShane’s 11-yard touchdown run put the Leathernec­ks on top, and Jamie Gilmore’s 1-yard plunge made it 14-0 with a minute remaining in the first quarter.

Maddie and Ryan Graham combined to pass for 251 yards and two scores for Northern Illinois (0-4), which has lost seven straight dating to last season.

It was the first meeting between the two schools since 2009. …

Buffalo 23, Army 20: Tyree Jackson passed for 178 yards and a touchdown and ran for 34 yards and two more touchdowns to lead Buffalo in a 23-20 comeback win over Army on overtime on Saturday night.

Adam Mitcheson secured the win with a 33-yard field goal in overtime as Buffalo (1-2) won its first game of the season. Army’s Blake Wilson had missed a 43-yard field goal attempt in OT and also missed a 34-yarder in the final three seconds of regulation.

Buffalo scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to tie the game at 20-20 with 2:26 remaining. Army had not allowed an opponent to score in the fourth quarter in its first three wins.

Army (3-1) rushed for 396 yards on 67 carries. The Black Knights’ had the nation’s No. 2 rushing attack, averaging 367 yards in its first three games.

Quarterbac­k Ahmad Bradshaw rushed for a season-high 126 yards on 22 carries had a 5-yard touchdown run that put Army up 20-6 late in the third quarter. Fullback Andy Davidson rushed for 80 yards on 18 carries after going over 100 yards in each of the first three games.

Wilson made field goals from 21 and 38 yards out in the first half. Army’s starting placekicke­r, Mitchell Howard, injured his left leg making a tackle on the opening kickoff.

Kamari Holsey caught a 5-yard touchdown from Jackson to cut Army’s lead to 20-13 with 8:85 remaining.

Army led 10-0 at halftime, but Bradshaw’s fumble on the first drive of the second half gave Buffalo the ball at the Army 23. That led to Jackson’s first touchdown, but Mitcheson missed the extra point.
