Relief from CPAP Mask Irritation Issues

- SPECIAL TO NWA DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE

Controlling sleep apnea with cpap therapy means wearing a cpap mask. Unfortunately for some this means mask irritation issues. Redness, rashes, and even sores can be a common side effect of wearing a cpap mask. Most of these irritations happen to people who are new to cpap therapy. It may take a little while to get used to wearing a mask but these irritations will go away. There are a number of ways to eliminate these irritations, so you can focus on getting a full night of sleep. Since 1994, Northwest Arkansas physicians, insurance companies, and families have trusted Homefront Air and Medical Supplies for in-home oxygen delivery, medical supplies, and equipment. They are located at 3024 Market Ave. in Fayetteville. Visit their website at homefrontairandmedical.com contact by phone at (479) 444-0259 or email info@ homefrontairandmedical.com.

1. Be sure your mask is the right size. A mask that is too big or too small may cause irritation. If your mask is too big it will leak excess air. If your mask is too small, it may fit too tight and rub against your skin causing irritation. You might also try adjusting the straps, also called headgear, to customize your fit.

2. Use cpap mask liners. One of the best ways to alleviate skin irritations is to use a barrier between the mask and your skin. Liners are made of a soft cloth material. They prevent irritations and pressure marks. They also help absorb facial moisture and oils. The liner can also reduce the amount of air leaks in a mask.

3. Clean your mask regularly. Cleaning will ensure that your mask is free from bacteria that could cause skin irritation and even infection. A solution of warm water and soap works the best.

Do not use soap with added scents. Never use alcohol, vinegar, bleach, or antibacterial agents. Dish soap works the best.

4. Do not go to sleep with oily skin. Over the course of a day your face can become extremely oily. If you do not wash your face before you go to sleep your cpap mask will not have enough of a grip on your skin and will slide around. This will cause skin irritation. It is also important not to wear lotion. This will also cause your mask to move around causing leakage, redness and irritation.

5. You may need a new cpap mask. If you have tried all of the above recommendations, and you have no idea what is causing your skin irritation, there is a good chance you need a new mask. Cracking, dryness, stiffness or discoloration on the mask or the cushion, excessive leaking, are all signs that you need a new mask.
