Local youth win in shooter competitio­n

Eighty sporter division and eight precision division shooters from across the state competed in the 19th annual Arkansas American Legion Junior Olympic Three-Position Air Rifle Championsh­ip held March 11 at Fisher National Guard Armory in North Little Rock.

Three-position sporter and precision air rifle shooting represents a fast growing and large segment of youth sport shooting today. The tournament provides contestant­s an opportunit­y to test their marksmansh­ip skills by competing with other junior shooters throughout the nation.

The American Legion sponsors these programs of marksmansh­ip and gun safety education for Arkansas youth. Any Arkansas student currently enrolled in elementary, middle or high school or equivalent home schooling is eligible.

Local winners in the sporter division include: prone position, second place, Tor Skogen, Washington County Shooting Sports; third, Jacob Snell, Alma High School NJROTC. In the kneeling position: third place, Rachel Martin, Washington County Shooting Sports. The Washington County TNT won first in team competitio­n and Alma High School NJROTC took second.

In the precision division, prone position, winners include: second, Denise Quirarte, Fort Smith Northside High School JROTC; Third: Lex Young, Newport High School JROTC. Quirarte won first in the standing position and Eboni Robinson of Fort Smith Northside took second. Robinson won third in the kneeling position.

Quirarte won first in overall individual and Robinson won third. Fort Smith Northside won the team division.
