Day honors trail guru volunteer at Hobbs

Hikes, birding trips, bike rides and more are part of Al Knox Trails Day on Saturday at Hobbs State Park-Conservati­on Area.

The event recognizes Al Knox, who is retiring after many years as a volunteer and as the park’s trail maintenanc­e supervisor. Knox built miles of trail at Hobbs. He was hired by Arkansas State Parks as its first trail maintenanc­e supervisor.

An open house with Knox will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the visitor center on Arkansas 12, one-quarter mile east of War Eagle Road.

Schedule of other events: n 8 a.m. guided hike on Bashore Loop, four miles, meet at Piney Road trailhead. n 8:30 a.m. birding hike on Sinking Stream Trail, meet at Historic Van Winkle Hollow trailhead. n 9 a.m. guided mountain bike ride on War Eagle Loop, six miles, meet at Townsend Ridge Road trailhead. n 9 a.m. Saddle Up for Cancer horseback ride, Little Clifty Loop, meet at Townsend Ridge Road trailhead. n 10 a.m. photograph­y and wildflower hike, Pigeon Roost Trail, five miles, meet at Pigeon Roost trailhead. n 2 p.m guided hike, Dutton Hollow Loop, four miles, meet at Piney Road trailhead. n 2:30 p.m. guided hike, Shaddox Hollow Trail, 1.5 miles, meet at Shaddox Hollow trailhead. n 3:30 p.m. guided hike, Historic Van Winkle Trail, 0.5 miles, meet at Van Winkle trailhead.
